Dear Pauline,
Thank you for signing our pledge to comment and be a voice for peace and science. The PEIS has been released and the time to act is here. More details below!
The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and Department of Energy (DOE) are moving forward with plans to produce plutonium pits, the explosive bomb cores of modern thermonuclear weapons, at Los Alamos National Lab in New Mexico and the Savannah River Site in South Carolina. These new pits are unnecessary for the safety and security of the US nuclear weapons arsenal and are intended for newly designed nuclear warheads, which increase the nuclear threat.
As part of these plans, the DOE released its draft Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) regarding expanded plutonium pit production, kicking off a 90-day comment period.
The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) invites you to attend the May 14 hearing on plutonium pits and provide oral testimony as part of the PEIS comment period. Virtual and in-person options are available. We must hold the DOE and NNSA accountable to fully consider the public and environmental risks that come with expanded plutonium pit production.
