Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly advancing frontiers in weather and climate forecasting, transforming how information is modeled, interpreted, and used to inform decision-making. These advances open new opportunities for enhancing prediction, expanding forecast usability, and enabling more effective responses to climate risks.
The National Academies are hosting a hybrid workshop on January 13-14, 2026 at the Beckman Center in Irvine, CA that will explore innovative ways that AI can enhance climate science and support decision-making for resilience and mitigation. The workshop will identify critical applications where AI can inform climate action at speed and scale, consider how AI's broader societal impacts affect approaches for addressing climate change, and provide a forum for cross-sectoral dialogue.
