The Amah Mutsun Tribal Band has spoken out against the cruel and ignorant naming of a culturally significant place within Mutsun ancestral territory, Fremont Peak and Fremont Peak State Park. Fremont was a military commander who was responsible for many massacres of Indigenous Californians, including the largest one-day massacres of Indians in United States history. In early April, 1846 Fremont and his men committed the Sacramento River massacre killing up to 1000 Wintu people, mostly women and children, in what was described as a butchery.
