In 2013, 30, 000 incarcerated people went on a hunger strike that spread into a feat of unity across California prisons, the largest hunger strike in U.S. history. The award-winning feature documentary film The Strike follows solitary survivors who endured, often with little due process, decades of solitary confinement in California's notorious high-security supermax Pelican Bay State Prison.
They fought to abolish indefinite solitary confinement and human rights abuses in California prisons. They forced California prisons to reduce the use of mass-scale solitary confinement and ignited an international movement to end solitary confinement torture.
PBS (Independent Lens) will broadcast The Strike. Check your local listing for the specific broadcast time.
The Strike will also become available for free streaming on the PBS YouTube channel, starting at 9am PT / 12 noon ET.
