Fanning the Flames: The Reality of Climate Change and Wildfires in California
California has endured an escalating series of wildfire catastrophes in recent years, with hundreds of lives lost, tens of thousands of homes destroyed, and millions of acres burned. The extraordinary wildfire siege of summer and autumn 2020—during which the scope and intensity of fires was unprecedented in modern California—became an inescapable reality for millions of Californians as choking smoke blocked out the sun and created a secondary public health crisis in the midst of an existing respiratory pandemic. At a time of converging emergencies, two primary questions have emerged: what is the role of climate change, and what can we do to mitigate this exponentially growing crisis? In this webinar, we will discuss recent scientific research demonstrating a clear link between climate warming and worsening wildfires—as well how The Nature Conservancy is working to meet this dynamic challenge head-on through ongoing research efforts, fostering novel partnerships, and implementing active stewardship of our natural lands.
