"Aligning with the Nuclear Ban Treaty" is a free workshop on Friday, December 7 at 7 pm at the Resource Center for Nonviolence, 612 Ocean Street, Santa Cruz, facilitated by Dr. Timmon Wallis and Vicki Elson, co-founders of NuclearBan.US..
This is a hands-on, interactive workshop intended to inform, inspire, and mobilize action to support this game-changing new Treaty. Workshop participants will learn how they can align themselves, their organizations, their communities, and their local and state governments with the Treaty by boycotting and divesting from the nuclear weapons companies.
NuclearBan.US is a partner of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, winner of the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize for facilitating the
Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, adopted by 122 countries at the United Nations in July, 2017. It bans everything to do with nuclear weapons under international law.
NuclearBan.US calls on all governments to sign and ratify the Treaty. But to get there, we'll need to put pressure on the companies that make nuclear weapons as well as on the governments of the nine nuclear nations, including the US.
Says Elson, "Santa Cruz has been a Nuclear Free Zone since 1991. There was a joke that ‘anybody who nukes Santa Cruz will be in big trouble.' But boycotts and divestment can be added to city policy to give it ‘teeth' that will make it much more powerful, and can actually help support the elimination of nuclear weapons."
